Groundwater Close to the Slab
Epoxy flooring in South Salt Lake has to begin with a moisture test. Wikipedia describes the city as mostly flat with a fairly high water table, and much of its drinking water comes from wells tapping the aquifer below. Three tributaries of Mill Creek also converge in Fitts Park. When groundwater sits close to a slab, vapor can push up through the concrete and lift a coating that was never designed for it.
How we test and what we do with the numbers
We take readings across the floor, not just in one spot. On some jobs we also run a calcium chloride test, which shows how much vapor the slab gives off over time. Low readings mean a standard primer is fine. Higher readings call for a moisture-mitigating epoxy primer, which acts as a barrier between the slab and the finish. If water is actively seeping in, we say so plainly and recommend fixing it before any coating.
Old buildings and brand-new ones
South Salt Lake has an unusual mix. Census survey data dates about 10% of local housing to 1939 or before, while 22% went up between 2010 and 2019. Older slabs are more likely to lack a vapor barrier. Newer ones may still be releasing construction moisture. Both get tested.

A renter-heavy city
About 61.8% of occupied homes here are rented, and single-family detached houses make up just 33.4% of the housing stock. Apartment buildings have parking areas, trash rooms, bike rooms and maintenance shops that need tough floors. We can coat these spaces in phases and add markings for stalls and walkways.
Storefronts and restaurants
The world's first Kentucky Fried Chicken franchise opened in 1952 in what is now South Salt Lake, and newer projects range from the Chinatown development near 3500 South and State Street to The Crossing. Commercial kitchens and back rooms need seamless, slip-resistant floors that handle grease and frequent washing.
Planning around the water
If your property sits near one of the Mill Creek branches or in a low spot, plan for a few extra steps. A moisture-mitigating primer adds to the cost but protects the investment. We list it as a separate line so you can see exactly why it is there.

South Salt Lake Questions
What is a calcium chloride moisture test?
It measures how much water vapor a slab releases over a set time. We use it, along with meter readings, to decide whether a moisture-mitigating primer is needed.
Does a high water table mean I cannot coat my floor?
No. It means careful testing and possibly a moisture-mitigating primer. Any active leak gets repaired before we coat.
Can you coat a commercial kitchen floor?
Yes. We install seamless, slip-resistant systems that handle grease and frequent washing, often with a coved base.
Do you coat apartment trash and bike rooms?
Yes. These rooms take heavy wear and benefit from tough, easy-clean floors. We work in phases to keep them usable.
